My idea for A Monarch
Universe came from my interest in the creation of the universe. I love
astronomy. I saw a program on
how Monarch caterpillars, when they form a chrysalis, actually liquefy
themselves and reform into the beautiful Monarch butterfly. That reminded me of the creation of
stars and how stars are born and how they die and reform again, like a
Monarch butterfly.
As I studied more into butterflies, I found out that there
were butterfly patterns throughout the universe. I created A Monarch Universe to show some of these real universal
butterfly patterns. I form the chrysalis around the nebula to show the
birth, death, and rebirth cycles of nature.

Cosmic Hand Nebula
In June 2007, I began on A Monarch Universe,
and by November, the collection grew to 14 paintings. A Monarch Universe
Picture Book features images of these paintings. It was published in trade cover and electronic
format on CD in November 2007.
This summer, in June and July of 2009, I added five nebula chrysalis
paintings to A Monarch Universe Collection in anticipation of this
weekend’s Art on the Rocks.
