Marquette, MI--What do a doctor, a miner, a musher and an accomplished pianist all have in common?   They are all Marquette County residents showing their support for the U.P. Diabetes Outreach Network (UPDON) by sharing their time and talents on Wednesday, April 30, for the first ever Diabetes. . . Silent No More. . .Silent Auction and Evening of Entertainment.

This exciting event is taking place from 6:30 – 9:00 pm at UpFront & Co. in Marquette with proceeds going to help support the continuation of the many programs and projects of the UPDON.

Dave Keranen of Ishpeming who has been employed at the Tilden Mine for over 30 years, will be entertaining guests with his original songs and guitar playing.  Both men have been amusing family and friends for years with their unique styles and humor.  Diabetes has brought them together to share their talents with a much larger audience on this one special night.

Dave Keranen of Ishpeming entertaining family with one of his original songs. His willingness to support the Diabetes. . . Silent No More Silent Auction and Evening of Entertainment stems from experiencing firsthand a family history of diabetes.  Dave is sure to entertain with his witty, U.P. flavored songs.

In addition to the entertainment, a silent auction will be held.  Accomplished pianist, Bob Buchkoe, has generously offered two hours of playing time to be auctioned off.  Jackie Winkowski, musher and author, will be offering a sled dog experience. Other items to be auctioned include a $100 gift certificate to the Big Bay Lighthouse Bed and Breakfast, an Avant Gardens gift certificate, a set of 8 Cutco table knives, an MP3 player from American of Marquette, and a signed commemorative Lambeau Field 50th anniversary Packer football.  These are just a few of the many unique items that will be available to bid on.  Four local dietitians are also offering their services – they will shop and prepare a dinner for four in your home; 2 different meals will be on the auction block.

The U.P. Diabetes Outreach Network was first established in Marquette in 1986 under a special grant from the state.  Because of the success this small non-profit organization five other Diabetes Outreach Networks were established across the state.  UPDON supports a variety of projects across the U.P.:

·         diabetes kids camp

·         diabetes expo (where many people receive free health screenings)

·         free and low-cost continuing education programs for healthcare professionals

·         various mentoring and educational programs for people with diabetes

·         programs that help people with diabetes who can not afford their care like the newly started program for U.P. students with diabetes who are attending U.P. colleges.

And that’s just to name a few.  A complete portfolio outlining UPDON’s history and projects can be viewed by visiting www.diabetesinmichigan.org choosing the U.P. and then “View Portfolio”.

UPDON has been largely funded by grants from the state over the past 22 years.  Unfortunately, in October 2007, funding was cut by 95%!  On the upside, most funding was restored a few months later.  On the downside, the funding is only guaranteed through September 2008.  This turn of events has forced UPDON to become proactive in the area of fundraising.  The proceeds from the Silent Auction and Evening of Entertainment will be used to start a diabetes endowment.  This endowment will help fund projects and programs that ensure people with diabetes across the U.P. have access to the care, supplies, and support that they need to live healthy and productive lives and that people at risk for developing diabetes (40% of people aged 45 – 74) are able to get the support they need to avoid developing diabetes.

Tickets for Diabetes. . . Silent No More are $20 per person and may be purchased via check or cash at any of these locations:  Sunny 101.9 located in the Marquette Mall, UPDON located at 220 W. Washington, Suite 420 or Jubilee Foods on US 41 in Ishpeming.  The number of tickets are limited so early purchase is encouraged.  This is expected to be a sold out event!  In addition to the unique entertainment and the chance to bid on great items, hors d'oeuvres and soft drinks will be provided.  This truly will be a night to remember for a cause that should not be forgotten.
